ARTISTIC DIRECTOR, California Ballet Company

Jared Nelson is the new Artistic Director of California Ballet, having been appointed to the position in June 2018. Mr. Nelson was trained in many forms of dance and began dancing professionally at the age of 14 with the Sacramento Music Circus. He became an apprentice with the Sacramento Ballet that same year and soon became a principal dancer with more than a dozen original works choreographed on him by director Ron Cunningham. Mr. Nelson went on to dance for the Boston Ballet and the Washington Ballet at the Kennedy Center in starring roles for over two decades. Encouraged to start choreographing at a young age, Mr. Nelson has choreographed many original works for Sacramento Ballet including his Jump Jive that premiered when he was just 18 years old for the grand opening of the Ziggurat in Sacramento. Mr. Nelson has choreographed for the Honolulu Symphony, Trainwreck Dance Company, and the Washington Ballet, where he had a long choreographic partnership with Septime Webre. Mr. Nelson premiered his Ruled by Secrecy for California Ballet in 2016 and choreographed Billy Elliot the Musical, co-produced by California Ballet and San Diego Musical Theatre. Later this season, Mr. Nelson’s Cinderella will premiere at the San Diego Civic Theatre and he is currently overseeing pre-production for California Ballet’s all new Nutcracker, premiering December, 2019. He is excited to be sharing his vision of ballet with San Diego’s diverse audience.
